Solar Air Conditioning for Sheds and Workshops

Cool the shed when you are actually using it, with dedicated solar panels supplying the air conditioner through the day.

Ideal for workshops, sheds, studios, granny flats and outbuildings where daytime cooling is the priority.

Why cooling a shed usually means upgrading the power supply first

The air conditioner is often the point where a shed’s electrical supply runs out of headroom.

You may have lights, tools, chargers, a fridge and a few general power outlets working perfectly well.

Then you add a conventional split system.

Suddenly you are looking at the available circuit capacity, the sub-board, the cable run back to the house and whether the existing supply was ever designed for another significant load.

For a detached shed or workshop, that can turn a cooling job into a much larger electrical project.

A Solar AC DC system gives the air conditioner a dedicated solar input instead.

Its panels connect directly to the outdoor unit and provide DC power during daylight hours.

That makes particular sense in a building that is occupied during the same hours the panels are producing power.

How does solar airconditioning work?

New to solar airconditioning and curious as to how it works and whether it’s suitable for you? Watch the video below to hear from our very own Rob explain the key points about our solar aircon solutions.

How solar air conditioning works in a shed or workshop

The air conditioner runs from a dedicated set of solar panels rather than relying entirely on the shed’s existing electrical supply during the day.

The unit automatically responds to the solar power available.

For a workshop used through normal working hours, that creates a very natural operating pattern.

Running the shed air conditioner during working hours

You arrive in the morning.

As available sunlight increases, the unit can start automatically and begin cooling or heating the space.

It continues operating from the dedicated panels through the working day as solar production allows.

There is no need to wait until the shed is already unbearably hot before switching the air conditioner on.

The system can be working on the building before or while you are working in it.

What happens outside daylight hours

If you need cooling or heating after solar production has fallen away, a hybrid model can use the property’s existing power supply, however, the power consumption can be limited to reduce consumption.

For sheds that are only occupied during daylight hours, solar-led operation may be the more relevant use case.

The exact electrical requirements for the chosen model and installation should be confirmed when the system is specified.

Cooling a Colorbond or uninsulated shed

Solar production changes with conditions.

When cloud cover reduces the output of the dedicated panels, the available solar contribution also falls.

Hybrid models can use the connected household supply when additional power is required.

The WiFi app provides live visibility of solar and mains power use, so you can see where the unit’s power is coming from while it is running.

Why Solar Airconditioning vs Traditional Systems?

Both units cool a room. What separates them is how each one behaves when the power available to it is finite.

Conventional split system Solar AC DC
Where the power comes from Runs from the property’s existing AC supply, which usually means drawing from the battery bank, inverter or generator. Runs directly from its own dedicated solar panels during daylight hours, separate from the house power system.
Effect on the battery bank Air conditioning becomes another significant load that the battery bank needs to support whenever the unit is running. During normal daytime solar operation, the air conditioner does not draw from the house battery bank.
Inverter requirements The inverter needs enough capacity to operate the air conditioner alongside the other loads already running in the house. The dedicated solar panels supply DC power directly to the air conditioner, so the house inverter does not need to carry the daytime cooling load.
Battery storage requirements Longer air conditioner run times may require additional battery capacity, particularly if cooling continues into the evening. No additional battery storage is required for the air conditioner to operate from its dedicated panels during the day.
How the solar power is used Solar power is converted from DC to AC by the house inverter before it is available to the air conditioner. DC power from the dedicated panels is supplied directly to the outdoor unit without first passing through a solar inverter.
During strong sunlight The air conditioner continues drawing from the property’s AC system, with rooftop solar offsetting some or all of that demand depending on what the rest of the property is using. The unit uses the power available from its dedicated solar array and can run independently of the house battery system during normal solar operation.
During passing cloud The air conditioner continues demanding the power required to maintain output, with any solar shortfall coming from the battery bank, generator or other connected supply. The unit responds to the solar power available. A hybrid system can use the connected supply when additional power is required.
At night Continues operating from the property’s battery bank, generator or other AC supply. A hybrid model can switch to the property’s existing power supply after solar production falls away, or the unit can be left to stop when solar is no longer available.
Generator use On some off-grid properties, the generator is used to avoid placing the full air conditioning load on the batteries. Daytime operation can come directly from the dedicated solar array, reducing the need to run the generator simply to power the air conditioner.
Visibility of power use Power use is generally monitored through the property’s broader inverter, battery or energy monitoring system, if one is installed. The WiFi app shows the air conditioner’s live solar and mains power draw, along with usage history and timers.
Impact on the existing off-grid system Adding air conditioning can mean reassessing the inverter, battery storage, charging capacity and generator requirements of the property. The dedicated daytime solar supply is separate from the existing house system, so the air conditioner can be added without resizing the house inverter or battery bank for daytime solar operation.
How it tends to be used Owners may limit daytime use because they are conscious of the load being placed on the battery bank or generator. The unit can be left to operate through the solar day, helping cool the building while dedicated solar power is available.

How many panels a shed air conditioner needs

Most installations use between four and eight dedicated solar panels. If you have older panels available, they can be used.

The final number depends on unit size, panel output, orientation and where the property is located.

Panels can be positioned around the needs of the air conditioner rather than incorporated into an existing household solar array.

That can be particularly useful on rural blocks and larger properties where there is more flexibility around array location.

A practical fit for daytime spaces

A shed is one of the clearest applications for direct solar air conditioning.

The building is often hottest in the middle of the day.

That is usually when you are working in it.

It is also when the solar array has the most useful generation available.

Instead of designing the system around overnight operation that may never be needed, you can design it around the hours the building is actually occupied.

Shed air conditioning questions answered

Can I air condition a shed with solar panels?

Yes.

Solar AC DC units can take DC power directly from their own dedicated solar panels during daylight hours.

The system should still be sized to the shed itself, particularly where the building is metal, uninsulated or has large doors that are regularly opened.

Can I air condition a shed that has limited electrical capacity?

A dedicated DC solar array can supply the air conditioner directly during solar operation, reducing the need to make the air conditioner another daytime load on the existing shed supply.

The final electrical requirements should be assessed for the particular installation.

Does a shed air conditioner need batteries?

No battery bank is required for daytime direct solar operation.

What happens when the sun goes down?

A hybrid system can use an existing electrical supply after available solar falls away.

Where cooling is only required during working hours, you may decide that overnight operation is unnecessary.

Will it cool an uninsulated Colorbond shed?

It can cool metal and uninsulated structures, although the cooling load can be significantly higher.

Sizing depends on the building, its exposure and how it is used.

Provide the shed dimensions and construction details when requesting a quote.

Can I use it in a workshop with machinery running?

Yes, although the air conditioner should be sized around the room conditions and intended use.

Heat-producing machinery, extraction systems and regularly opened doors can all increase the cooling load.

How many panels will I need?

Most installations use four to eight dedicated panels.

The exact array depends on the selected air conditioner, panel output and installation location.

Can it heat the shed in winter?

Yes.

The available systems are reverse cycle and provide both heating and cooling.
